I bought this item after reading a review of it in 'Tolkien Studies'. Highly recommended for the serious student of Tolkien.

I thoroughly enjoyed most of the essays in this collection. This is a wide-ranging group of pieces, and so not all of them really captured my attention.

This is a collection of pieces - 23 in all - by Tom Shippey, most already published, grouped together under "arboreal" headings ("The Roots" for Tolkien's predecessors, "Heartwood" for philology, "The Trunk" for The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion, "Twigs and Branches" for minor works).
